ZEN
and the Art of Mental Maintenance

OK, so we’re not dealing with motorcycles here and the emphasis has nothing to do with Zen in the religious sense.  (…but it does owe a ‘tip of the hat’ to the 1974 classic: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.) This is a stimulating seminar that focuses on Leadership skills; but has been enjoyed by a wide variety of audiences.

Audiences find the subject fascinating and of great practical importance. We live in a world where our most sophisticated computers are constantly becoming obsolete; but most of us do very little maintenance on the most critical bio-computer we’ll ever possess. When’s the last time you ‘tuned up’ your brain? Would you like to improve your memory and increase your creativity? Would you like to increase your skills of perception and listening? Would you like to have some fun in the process?

This is an interactive seminar that has drawn rave reviews and is guaranteed to open your eyes to ways in which you can improve your ability to think, innovate and organize material. This seminar starts with all of the participants trying their hand at the art of juggling! With a few quick illustrations and explanations you’ll learn why this is a favored technique for learning how to “rewire your brain.” Understanding how your brain works is the key to having a brain that can work for you.

[A fun, interactive workshop, the length of which is dependent upon the number of topics desired. It is best to have at least 1 and 1/2 hours available; but it could easily be half a day or a full day. The opening and closing segments are generally kept the same; but the middle portion is customized to include specific components from the list below, depending on the time available and the specific needs of the audience.]

* How to Rewire Your Brain   * Learning to Listen   * Living Along The Edge  *  Using the other part of your Brain (subconscious mind)   * How To Improve Your Bottom Line   * Finding Your Purpose  * Strategic Planning  * Becoming a Team Builder   * Developing a Goal Mind  * The Secrets of Persuasion  * Making Mind Maps  * Interpersonal Communication  * The Power of Vision   * Understanding the 'Pyramid Shift'   * Dealing with Change (best covered in an expanded session)  * Moving from Manager to Leader  * The Importance of doing it NOW!
    Leadership as a Lifestyle

Over the past 25 years more that seventy-five thousand business managers and executives have been surveyed on the subject of Leadership. A major purpose of that research has been to determine what qualities they most look for and admire in a leader; someone whose direction they would willingly follow.”  With amazing consistency, four qualities keep finding their way to the top of the list:

1)Honesty & Integrity, 2) Vision, 3) Inspiration, 4) Competence.

Experience has shown that when these four qualities are closely examined, comprehended and consistently put into practice; they begin to be reflected in every aspect of a person’s life. They’re not the kind of qualities you can “keep on tap” to be turned on or off as needed. These four qualities are foundational to the kind of leadership that’s based on core values, character and commitment to a mission. Through a series of interactive exercises, illustrations, presentations, stories, facilitated discussions and group activities; Leadership as a Lifestyle successfully brings each of those four qualities to life.
“I would say this program was awesome.”

      "Butterflies, Buzzards & Bees…”

What do you get when you cross a former Naturalist with the subject of Leadership?  You get about 40 minutes of fun, information and inspiration entitled
"Butterflies, Buzzards and Bees..." This has been a favorite for Leadership programs around the nation, and conference committees often choose it as a luncheon / banquet presentation to go along with a keynote address or workshop. It can also be used as a perfect conclusion to an outstanding Leadership Conference.

The first half reveals fascinating facts about the natural history of the three subjects; but the real surpirse comes as you discover the amazing parallel between their actions and the key characteristics we're all wanting our Leaders to develop!  It's a fun and memorable way to encourage Leaders to: (#1)
Help their organization get to a better place, (#2) Do what others refuse to do, and (#3) Accomplish what doesn’t seem possible!

The Art of Living Along The Edge

Let’s take a serious look at one of the most essential qualities for living a successful life.  All too often we can see what needs to be done; we know how to do what needs to be done; but we faulter for a lack of courage. Winston Churchill said “Without courage all other virtues lose their meaning.”  How can we accomplishing anything worthwhile without courage?

Fear isn’t the opposite of courage; it’s just an indicator that we’re facing a situation that will require courage if we’re going to succeed. Everyone knows what it’s like to be discouraged so it’s high time that we learn how to be encouraged.  Don’t miss the opportunity to learn more about how to develop this important leadership life skill, and don’t forget to bring your friends and associates. Courage is contagious!

"Leadership doesn't come through a lecture; but learning is always a part of leadership."    RCF
This program has multiple components that are adjusted to meet the specific needs of audience. While it conveys a great deal of relevant and up to date information, the real magic comes from participant involvement, group interaction and a major dose of humor. In the real world we can no longer just “slip on our leadership hat” and get the job done. Authentic leadership isn’t a wardrobe accessory… it’s a Lifestyle!

[Key components of this seminar can be customized for sessions lasting less than a day. For optimum results the program is presented in a four day format that allows maximum opportunities for interactive learning.]

The Five Serious Cs of Leadership

Character: ------------- Why we’re counting on yours!.
Culture: ----------------- Where it colors our perception.
Coaching: -------------  How to correct your course.
Communication: ---- When you connect.
Courage: --------------- What it takes to “Live Along the Edge."

[Note: Even though "Serious" is part of the title, audiences have had nothing but praise for how this seminar is delivered. Typical evaluation comments find participants describing the day's activities with words like “Inspiring,” “Stimulating,” “Entertaining,” “Engaging”, “Powerful”, and even “Fun!”]

Question:      How much would get done if no one stepped
                                 forward to lead?

Answer:           Not much

Leadership does make things happen… but we need to remember that leadership never “just happens.”  For the most part, this thing we call leadership is a set of learned behaviors. Yes, we're all born with varying degrees of talent; but successful leadership is developed over time by learning, practicing and implementing a set of skills. How good could you be if you worked at it?

The top three objectives for this seminar are:

1) Recognize and understand why leadership skills are just as important in your personal life as they are in your professional life; 2) Learn and implement simple, straightforward techniques that will immediately improve your leadership skills; 3) Set in motion behaviors that will enable you to make continuous improvements throughout the rest of your life.  Those objectives and much more are addressed in multiple ways in The Five Serious "Cs" of Leadership.

Did you know that worldwide surveys have identified the four most-sought-after qualities in a leader?  Surprisingly, the ranking order for three of those qualities has varied over the years. Character, on the other hand, has reigned supreme at the top of the list. As we focus on character you’ll learn some surprising truths about honesty,  and how to program your sub-conscious mind.  You'll also learn three specific ways you can exercise your Integrity every day.

Leaders are always dealing with Culture...  but did you know that "cultivating the deal" may be a leader’s toughest job? I'm talking about "the deal" within an organization’s culture that can defuse a disaster before it happens.  Now is a good time to evaluate your organization’s culture and start “cultivating the deal" that can end problems before they start.

Premier Executive Coaches are paid over $100,000 to provide one-on-one Coaching to individual corporate leaders.  Wouldn’t you like to learn their "Seven Steps to Self-Improvement" without having to pay a fortune? Seminar participants get hands-on experience with an interactive application of these. They’ll also learn how great leaders: “See the invisible”, “Hear the unspoken” and “Do the difficult.”

All too often we find that problems in leadership are connected to failures in the realm of Communication.  We live in a confusing world; but there's one communication technique that essentially never fails.  Do you know what it is?  Experts say 55% of face to face communication is nonverbal.  Learn how to say things without opening your mouth.

Courage: The one thing we know for sure is that courage is contagious.  It may be possible to lead without courage...  but not very far. In the end, good leaders have to have the courage of their convictions. Learn how.

[This program is normally provided in a full-day session. It can also be incorporated into a multiday session such as Leadership as a Lifestyle. An abbreviated version can be presented in a half-day format.]
